Druckin Munchkin Orgies @ the Culver Hotel

Stopped by the Culver Hotel, as I often do, to meet a friend for a drink over the weekend, only this time it was Saturday at noon instead of all hours of the evening. I’ve been there twice in the last week, not just because it’s convenient, but because I genuinely love the atmosphere.

So you just go ahead and fill in the blanks here so we can get to the good stuff — blah blah salty-riffic dirty martinis, appetizer platter of the finest meats and cheeses, blah blah National Register of Historic Places, friendly family owners, munchkin orgies.

They represent the Lollipop Guild.

You heard me. Ever since I moved to Culver City five (gulp) years ago, I’ve been hearing from CA natives about the purported MUNCHKIN ORGIES at the Culver Hotel during the filming of The Wizard of Oz in 1939. According to this article (and it’s on the Internet, so it MUST be true), producer Mervyn LeRoy said soon after the movie wrapped: “They had sex orgies in the hotel, and we had to have police on just about every floor.” Judy Garland called them “…little drunks.”

In other words, these are my (little) people. To be fair, the Munchkins have vehemently denied the allegations and blamed their bad rep on a few horny little Germans. (It’s always the Germans!) But whether or not these rumors are baseless, one thing is clear: there ain’t no party like a munchkin party. And there’s always a party at the Culver Hotel. Word to your Mother.
